The ANA Group released its financial results for the previous fiscal year on April 27. The airline group reported a “strong financial performance” that marked the first year of profitable operations since the pandemic. Here is how the carrier accomplished this favorable result.

With fewer obstacles to travel, there are more passengers.

Positive financial results were reported for the period between April 1, 2022 and March 31, 2023 by Japan’s ANA. Kimihiro Nakahori, Executive Vice President and Group Chief Financial Officer of ANA Group, stated that the results “are a testament to the commitment of our employees, the loyalty of our customers, and the support of our stakeholders, all of which point to a bright future.”

The company cites “the gradual easing of entry restrictions in various countries” as the primary driver of increased ticket sales and revenue, not only for the ANA Group’s namesake airline, but also for its low-cost subsidiary Peach.

While noting that its operation-related costs have increased with the economic recovery, ANA has also worked to reduce expenses “through the execution of structural business reforms, while being supported by various tax exemptions and government subsidies.”

The government of Japan resumed visa-free travel on October 11, 2022, a significant development for ANA and other airlines serving Japan. As this policy change took effect at the beginning of the second half of ANA Group’s recently concluded fiscal year, the positive impact is evident in its financial results.

Capturing North American and Asian demand

Offering more information on its profitable year, the airline group focuses heavily on the demand for North American to Asian connections. The airline reports that it has increased the number of flights to/from North America and Asia.

In the first half of the year, Narita Airport will focus on connecting traffic between North America and Asia. More recently, in January 2023, the airline increased its departures from Haneda Airport, especially to Delhi and Sydney.

According to FlightRadar24.com, ANA operates 14 weekly (daily) Boeing 787-9 flights from Tokyo Haneda to Sydney. The airline operates daily service to the Indian capital using the 787-9 aircraft.

On the North American side, the airline operates two daily flights to Honolulu, with one flight using the A380 out of Narita and the other using the 787-9 out of Haneda. Chicago and San Francisco are important destinations for ANA, as the Boeing 777-300ER serves both cities twice daily. One service departs from Haneda, while the other departs from Narita.

Los Angeles appears to be the ANA destination with the greatest number of frequencies. A mixture of 787-8s and 787-9s will be deployed to the city in southern California. Intriguingly, the 787-9s have a few more seats than the ANA 777-300ERs, which have a more luxurious configuration with eight first-class seats.
